Regulations

Good to know before you ask

Placing fill in waters of the United States, including many wetlands, can require a Section 404 permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and states and localities often have their own wetland rules. A delineation, based on soils, vegetation and hydrology, locates the boundary on the ground.

Some field indicators are only reliable in certain seasons: plan the delineation early. We do not perform delineations ourselves and do not show prices.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a wetland delineation?

A field survey that identifies and flags the boundary of wetlands on a property, based on soils, vegetation and hydrology, following the Corps of Engineers manual.

Do I need a permit to build near a wetland?

Filling regulated wetlands generally needs a federal permit, and many states and counties regulate wetlands and buffers too. A consultant can tell you which rules apply.

What is a jurisdictional determination?

A decision by the Corps of Engineers on whether wetlands or waters on a site are regulated under federal law.
